Celebrities wield huge amounts of influence in much of the Western world. Many of them take that influence seriously and spend their time supporting charity organizations. There are some celebrities, however, who go above and beyond in helping make the world a better place. These are the stories of celebrities taking philanthropy a step further.

5. Ricky Gervais

The comedian and creator of The Office (2001) has a huge heart when it comes to animals. Gervais has lent his voice to support one of GreaterGood.org‘s partners, The Soi Dog Foundation, an organization that rescues dogs from the illegal meat trade in Southeast Asia. The Soi Dog Foundation has been successful in building shelters and saving thousands of dogs!

In the video located on their website (warning: the video contains graphic content), Gervais and other celebrities show their horrified and sad reactions to real footage of the illegal dog trade. The contents of the video are horrific and graphic, but depict the reality of the conditions that innocent dogs face every day. You can help save these dogs with just a small donation!

4. Jordin Sparks

Jordin Sparks has been a singer her entire life. Beginning her recording career in 2003 with the For Now EP, she went on to win season 6 of American Idol in 2007 at the age of 17, becoming the show’s youngest winner. But in addition to touching people with her voice, she’s brought joy to countless lives through her charity work since partnering with GreaterGood.org and our “The Other Side” campaign.

The mission of “The Other Side” is to provide education to those “struggling with health, literacy, and self-esteem by providing resources, education, and a helping hand.” Recently, “The Other Side” has been focusing on ensuring that children have full access to education. With the help of people like Jordin Sparks, the organization has been able to provide supplies, curriculum and training to teachers, as well as to keep the Creole language alive in schools. You too can help send a girl to school and end the cycle of poverty!

3. Angelina Jolie

In March 2015, Angelina Jolie visited displaced Iraqis for a second time as part of her mission to aid refugees. She went to multiple camps and heard the stories of struggle directly from the individuals that her work is trying to help. It’s inspiring to see her connect with the people she’s helping!

Since the shooting of Tomb Raider (2001) in Cambodia, Angelina Jolie has opened up her heart to refugees across the world. While she was in Cambodia, Jolie saw the struggle of refugees in a close and personal light. Since that experience, she has been driven to help refugees in over 20 countries through her field work!

Mercy Corps is also providing emergency aid to people displaced from their homes in Syria. Your donation will help provide families with food, clean water, and supplies during their stay in refugee camps. You too can help provide relief to refugees in the Middle East!

2. Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington has always had those who serve our country in his heart. He even took the time to mention their honorable service in his 1990 Oscar acceptance speech after winning Best Supporting Actor for the film Glory! It’s hard not to get emotional. Check it out!

Known for inspiring films such as Remember the Titans (2000) and Antwone Fisher (2002), Denzel is not only a star of the screen but a star in the world of charity too! At the end of 2004, Washington paid a visit to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, where he met wounded soldiers and saw several houses run by the Fisher House Foundation, an organization that provides short term housing to families of wounded soldiers while they heal. Washington was so moved by this that he made a very generous donation to the organization, the largest one in their history!

You can be a hero and help house homeless veterans. A donation to Veterans Matter helps move homeless veterans off the streets and into housing.

1. Sean Penn

Earlier this year, Sean Penn organized a charity gala and fundraiser called “HELP HAITI HOME.” The event served as a beacon to the celebrity community to use their star power to help the less fortunate. Check out the celebrities that attended the event and used their wealth and power to help Haiti!

Money raised by such generous and charitable people has helped Haiti get back on its feet after the devastating earthquake in 2010. Penn used his charisma and connections to bring these powerful people together, exposing them to the realities of Haitian life and giving them a chance to help with the recovery. You too can help Haiti grow strong again by providing families with life-giving egg-laying chickens!
