This Big-Hearted 9-Year Old Collected Over 1,000 Barbie Dolls, and She’s Giving Them All Away!

Like many people, Gianni Graham made a New Year’s resolution to do something positive. Unlike many people who make resolutions, she’s following through with her pledge to collect 1,000 Barbie dolls for girls living in foster care and homeless shelters. At 9 years of age, Gianni is inspiring people all around the world to help uplift the spirits of less-fortunate children. Barbie dolls are flooding into her Norfolk, Virginia, home, and thanks to the outpouring of support, she’s surpassed her original goal. Gianni got the idea to donate Barbie dolls to girls not as fortunate as her while playing with her own Barbie dolls. She sympathizes with girls her own age who are going through difficult times, inherently understanding that they don’t have many opportunities to play with nice dolls. Her view is that Barbie dolls can be a means of emotional support, giving these girls a friend with which to share their feelings.
Gianni shared her cause on Facebook and assumed it would take two months to collect enough dolls to reach her goal.
To her surprise, an avalanche of Barbies began showing up at her doorstep, and she started getting media attention. It turns out that Gianni got a boost from actor Ashton Kutcher, who shared a post about her Barbie collection drive on his Facebook page. “I didn’t even know he was going to see it,” Gianni said. Since then, she has appeared on the local news and national TV shows such as Good Morning America. To her credit, the media attention is not distracting this fourth grader from her mission to help girls in need. With assistance from her mother and grandmother, Gianni stays busy gift wrapping and boxing the donated dolls for shipment.
All signs point to her “1K Barbies For 1K Girls” movement growing into a lasting organization that brightens the lives of countless girls.
