Watch How The Magnus Effect Changes What A Basketball Does When Dropped
Posted by GreaterGoodness
Standing on top of the Gorden Dam in Tazmania with the intention of dropping a basketball into a hoop from a ridiculous height, these guys unexpectedly witnessed a phenomena called the Magnus Effect. What is that, you may be asking. Well, essentially by spinning the basketballs these guys were dropping, instead of just letting them fall, they were creating lift which caused the balls to look like they were floating away. As one side of the ball spins in one direction with the wind, and the other side of the ball spins with equal force in the opposite direction against the wind, the ball is pulled in the direction of least resistance. Make sense. Maybe the guy in the video can do a better job of explain it. He uses pictures.
