Photographer Answers A Question We’ve All Had: “I Wonder What It’s Like To Live Like That.”

In 2009, famed Steve Liss gave up shooting presidents and TIME magazine covers to embark on a more meaningful project: “In Our Own Backyard,” an effort to raise awareness, dispel stereotypes and encourage action to address poverty in the United States.

Through the power of photojournalism, Liss and his partners share hard-hitting images that capture the reality of a life of poverty. It is an unabashed look at “how the other half lives,” which will hopefully help jump-start a national conversation about the issue of poverty.
