Tim Tebow Attends Prom for Special Needs Kids!
Posted by GreaterGoodness
Quarterback Tim Tebow is known for his dedication to playing the game of football with heart and sacrifice. In addition to his devotion to success on the gridiron, he also lends his time and passion to his philanthropic organization, the Tim Tebow Foundation.
According to the organization’s website, its mission is to bring faith, hope and love to people with special needs. One of the foundation’s programs, A Night to Shine, provides prom night to special needs kids and those with disabilities. Tebow got the idea for his foundation while visiting a remote school in the Philippines when he was just 15 years old. He watched a special needs child be forced to sit out an event because of a physical disability. Even at a young age, Tebow understood the importance of fighting for those who couldn’t fight for themselves. As an adult, he wanted to send the message of God’s love and let special needs kids know they are not alone.
Tim Tebow set out to make Valentine’s Day mean something more than candy and flowers. As a unique way to make special needs kids feel love and accepted, he created Night to Shine, a special prom night for those aged 16 and up.
In 2015, the first Night to Shine took place in 44 locations in 26 states and in two international locations in Uganda and Kenya. Tebow even made an appearance at the New York location and provided his own special contribution by shining the shoes of attendees. Guests also had an opportunity to have their picture taken with Tebow. Seeing kids enjoy their first prom was special for Tebow, but it also had a personal significance for the athlete. Homeschooled through high school, Tebow experienced the prom for the first time in 2015 at his foundation’s event.
Night to Shine comes complete with hair and makeup stations, as well as donated tuxedos and gowns. Every guest receives a crown by the night’s end. Other special touches include limousine rides, dinner, refreshments, a dance floor and a red carpet walk complete with paparazzi.
For 2016, the event expanded to 48 states and eight different countries. In 2016, the event had more than 70,000 volunteers and 32,000 honored guests who all shared in the very special prom night. The event not only lets the children shine, it allows the volunteers and everyone involved to reflect the love of God.
If you want to donate your time and resources to Night to Shine, you can read details about how to get involved on the foundation’s website. Kids who want to attend a prom event can also search the site to find a location close to their home. Most of the proms and registration for the events take place at local churches. Churches that wish to apply to host a prom can go to the foundation website to learn more about the process. The foundation gives money and provides detailed instructions about how to organize the event.
Tim Tebow is a class act both on the football field and off. He uses his power and influence to coordinate a special event for high school students with special needs across the globe. In the course of his charitable work, Tebow is conveying the message that all kids are special.
