So, Why DOES Rain Have That Smell??

Posted by GreaterGoodness

Ever since I was a kid I’ve loved the smell of fresh rain in the spring and summer months. There’s just something so refreshing, and almost magical, about it. Even now, I can’t help but stop and take notice of it around me. But why?? As much as I enjoy it I’ve never known what it is about a fresh rain that makes me love it so much. Until now!

Thanks to science, and human curiosity, we know exactly what it is about rain that makes us all enjoy it so much. There are three distinct things that cause rain to smell the way it does:

1 – Ozone

Usually just trapped in the atmosphere above us, it’s what give’s rain the sweeter smell.

2 – Petrichor

These are plant oils that build up when it’s dry and eventually get displaced into the air when it rains and give it that plant-like and fresh smell.

3 – Geosmin

Created by bacteria in soil, this is what gives rain that earthy, almost musty smell.

We hope this helps shed some light on one of life’s little mysteries for you. Be sure to check out the video below for a more detail explanation what all this means.
